Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla

Kensho Yamashita

Japan, 1994, 106 min
Columbia TriStar Films

Saturday Matinees hold a special place in the hearts of movie buffs older than home video, so we resurrected this almost forgotten tradition. Who better to launch the series than Godzilla? This movie icon earned his place in Hollywood history breathing radioactive fire on cities, and battling monsters, thrilling children of all ages with larger-than-life adventures for almost 50 years. By special arrangement with the Film Library and Archive at Columbia TriStar we are proud to present the only English language print of the rarely seen Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla.

Forget that awful Hollywood version with a big pregnant iguana, this is the real thing. Godzilla cells have been blasted into space (in Godzilla vs. Biollante) and sucked into a black hole where they mutated into Space Godzilla, who comes back to wreak mutant havoc on Earth. Somewhat predictably, chaos ensues. Featuring appearances by Mothra, baby Godzilla, Fairy Mothra, and other giant robots and mysterious beasts, it will satisfy any long-neglected cravings for Giant Monsters stomping on Tokyo.

Some background information for the uninitiated: the new Godzilla movies are episodes in a continuing series– imagine a surreal soap opera with 200 foot leading characters and really good special effects. This installment takes place after Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II and before Godzilla vs. Destroyah. Get a big popcorn, sit back and take a trip to Neo-Tokyo - a city held hostage by giant monsters from outer space.

Warning: This film contains men in rubber suits

Playing at:  8th Street Cinemas A, Saturday, March 8, 12:00 PM
