“Made on a microbudget, High Life is a slice of twentysomething Brooklynite life that might easily have turned pat or stagey,
yet emerges a razor-sharp miniature, capturing the precise moment when prolonged adolescence surrenders to sober adulthood. Solid fest item certainly bodes well for
the future of director Lila Yomtoob and her collaborators”. - Variety
Half art film and half teen comedy, High Life is a slice of life with a punk sensibility. An improvisational and character driven film developed during
three months of rehearsal, it takes place in real time, unfolding in front of 3 hand-held cameras. The result looks like a camera just happened to record
people living their lives.
Sy, an artist in his late twenties, lives in a loft/art studio. He is blocked, and having trouble making new work – and even more trouble showing any
of it to people. His ambitious girlfriend, Melissa, has set up a group show for him, hoping to help his career, and more importantly, make him the man she
wants him to be. When Sy’s 20 year-old brother brings his friends over to hang out, an ordinary day with this tightly knit group goes awry. High Life
deftly examines the pains and pleasures of accepting adult responsibility and finally growing up.
