Blood River, British director Adam Mason’s 3rd film (after festival favorites Broken and The Devil’s Chair) is a savage, psychological, (and philosophical) thriller that follows a married couple on (what first appears to be) a simple road trip on a remote desert highway in Nevada.

They are a perfect couple; he’s got a great job and she’s sweet, pretty and pregnant. The vacation is wonderful until shortly after they pass a mysterious drifter with piercing eyes, a grizzly scowl and a black cowboy hat. Following a blowout and accident on the side of the desert highway, Joseph the drifter (brilliantly performed by Howard) wanders toward them and offers to help. The Samaritan’s offer is gratefully accepted - even if he does slyly quote sinister passages of Scripture from time to time.

As the men go off to seek help, Blood River amps up the adrenaline level and ultimately takes the trio past the point of no return. - Mike Skurko
