Two teens rediscover aspects of the friendship they held in youth along with new feelings against the backdrop of a small Northwestern US logging town. Kevin Begins to emerge from depression and isolation with Mike back in his life. Kevin’s mother, a fundamental Christian, finds encouragement and hope in her son’s changes; his father is only suspicious of them. Both parents wish Kevin were more like his older brother who is off at war in the desert. Woven with a classic myth, the story illustrates budding sexuality, deception, and tragedy.
“For my first feature, I wanted to illustrate the contrast between beauty and destruction in this small-town logging community, and I wanted to make a film that told a literal tale of young, gay love, but clearly symbolized 2 aspects of a classic personality.
I have admired the styles of filmmakers such as Robert Bresson and Jon Jost, and I wanted to use digital media to realize ambiguity. I wanted to resist the tendency toward many cuts and a fast pace so easily afforded by current technology. Using only local, amateur actors, and shooting entirely on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, I wanted to avoid sensationalistic drama and simply tell the myth.” – Stephen Taylor
